Model Component: Gears

Description

I've decided to abandon the current gear set for the Timesword(revisited) project. With a little bit of planning, I have produced gears that have teeth of exactly the same size. The formula for them is quite simple as well. The procedure can produce gears up to any size or number of teeth, but I decided to stop at 32.

They use a multi-texture, so they can be recolored on the fly if need be. The color here is simply the Timesword's color scheme for them.

Formula (3d modeling)

(Requires a cylinder primitive)
1. Select a size for the smallest gear (radius). The smallest gear in this example is 5.
2. Determine how may teeth you would like the gear to have. The smallest gear in this example is 8.
3. Create a cylinder primitive with a radius of the amount that you selected in step 1.
4. Set the number of segments to be twice the number of desired teeth in step 2. The smallest gear in this example is 16 segments.
5. Extrude each alternating polygon to create teeth.

For larger gears, multiply the original radius and teeth value.
Example: The 2nd gear uses double the radius, so it has double the teeth. The third is tripled, and the fourth (largest) is quadrupled.

You could use a radius of 7.5 (1.5 x 5), so the number of teeth will have to be 12 (1.5 x 8). The 12 toothed gear should work with any of the others.
